Coconut Life Saver :)Feb 23, 2012
By Sepdawn I had just started hearing about this wonderful health tonic ( Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil)& wanted to share my satisfaction. I just wanted to share the fact that i am so much more lively since using coconut in my everyday diet. The authors did a amazing job at not only giving great recipes , but great understanding of how coconut effects and benefits your health in many ways. Thank You & I will continue to support EVCO and all of its benefits in the future.

Don't rely on this for health informationMar 08, 2012

The book argues that native peoples such as those living in the Phillipines have one of the lowest incidences of heart disease in the world and they ingest large quantities of the saturated fats of coconut oil and coconut products. The assertion is made that the original medical research which correlated high cholesterol levels with clogged arteries and a high incidence of heart disease was a faulty conclusion. The book maintains that high cholesterol is not the culprit originally thought and sugar was probably more of a villain in the American diet leading to cardiovascular disease than saturated fats.
A major problem with the argument in the book is that no other variables are identified that could be responsible for the differences in rate of heart disease of people living in the Philipines or South America v. America and the West. No mention was made of genetic differences, stress levels, environmental factors or other foods in the diet of native people of the Philipines that could account for the differences in rates of heart disease. The book maintains the lower rates of heart disease are the result of eating large amounts of coconut oil and products and that you shouldn't be concerned about the elevation of cholesterol levels due to ingestion of the coconut products.
No credentials are given for the author establishing expertise in nutrition, medical background, etc. The individual listed with RD (Registered Dietician) is given credit in the acknowledgments for the nutritional statistics and is listed as "with" on the front cover but no vitae or listing of professional qualifications, where employed, how long in the field, specialty, etc. were given.
The author cites a doctor of chiropractic as the expert on heart disease and health who has written a book that is available on his own web site. She also thanks her sister who teaches yoga and who has used the coconut products successfully for years.
No medical researcher or nutritionist is quoted as supporting the premise or claims of beneficial outcomes from using the saturated fats of coconut oil in the diet. No double-blind studies that compare the effects of a coconut diet v other diets are found in the book---all documentation of benefits is anecdotal.
There is a disclaimer in the front matter: "The information in this book should not be used for diagnosing or treating any health problem. Not all diet and exercise plans suit everyone. You should always consult a trained medical professional before starting a diet, taking any form of medication, or embarking on any fitness or weight-training program. The author and publisher disclaim any liability arising directly or indirectly from the use of this book."
This is only the second review of this book; please do not rely on the description by the author or the anecdotal "proof" given of the claims of benefits of the high saturated fat of coconut in the diet.
I am returning the copy of the book I ordered from amazon.com for a full refund.
